Celyn Hughes, 16, from Oakdale, a year 11 pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni has been singing classical music since the age of six. Celyn enjoys singing solo, duets, ensembles and in choirs. Celyn said: “I have always admired Catherine Jenkins because she has brought a less popular genre of singing to a more mainstream audience.”
Celyn has performed at school, in concerts and at the Eisteddfod: the Welsh festival of literature, music and performance.
Celyn’s immediate aim is to gain professional experience by performing at events such as weddings. Celyn said: “My voice naturally falls into a range that lends itself to singing opera. I am very fortunate to have the support of my mum, who is my biggest fan. My lifelong ambition is to perform professionally at the Sydney Opera House in Australia.”
Celyn’s mother Anita said: “I am very proud of my daughter’s talent and her wonderful singing voice. She works very hard and is studying drama and music at GCSE with the aim for A level and she is planning to study at university. Celyn is very creative, excellent at art and she can play guitar, piano and ukulele. She just passed grade 4 piano.”
